Durban: A Durban teenager had the scare of his life when he woke up from an afternoon nap to find a black mamba in his bedroom.

Durban snake catcher Nick Evans said he got the call Friday afternoon from a homeowner in Welbedacht, near Chatsworth, south of Durban.

“It appears the teenager was enjoying a nap around 3pm when he was awakened by shuffling noises in his room.

“Upon inspection, he found the great snake circling in his room and ran off as the snake made his way to his bed.

Evans said that when he arrived he had to look for the snake.

“When I lifted the mattress, I found the snake nestled between the mattress of the bed and the base of the bed.

He said it was a relatively easy rescue and that the snake was released in an area away from people.

Evans said the teenager did the right thing by leaving the room and seeking help, as black mambas are very poisonous.

In another incident earlier this month, Evans said he rescued a 2.2m one-bedroom mamba from a home in Westville North.

“The five-year-old grandson of the homeowner had gone into a bedroom to look for something, where, right in front of him, there was a two-meter-long Black Mamba, stretched out on some shoes.

Apparently he ran out of the room, shaking. The poor man had the scare of his life. The mamba was equally scared and crawled under the bed.

“It really was a quick and uncomplicated catch and the snake was released.”
