DURBAN – Durban snake hunter Nick Evans was very busy this week when he was called in to retrieve a huge python that had taken on a goat.
Evans said he headed to Camperdown after workers complained of hearing a goat bleat in the field.
“When they got close to the goat, they saw that a large python had wrapped itself around the goat and was squeezing it,” he said.
Evans said the workers hoped to kill the snake and eat it later, but then they called the farm owner, who then called him.
“I thought it was a joke or maybe a story made up by a worker after finding a dead goat, so I asked for a photo. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing when the photo appeared, ”Evans said.
He said that when he got to the farm, he headed to the area where the snake and the goat were seen.
“The massacre had taken place around 11:30 in the morning and it was now 5:30 pm. When the snake saw us approaching, it tried to slide and I moved, I grabbed its tail but couldn’t see much else. I knew it was a sizable snake, ”he said.
Evans said the wet conditions make it difficult for the snake to grasp.
He said he finally managed to grab the head of the snake with the help of his co-receiver, Tyrone Marcus.
“There was a time when the snake started wrapping itself around my head and I needed Tyrone to pull it off,” he said.
Evans said the snake was about 4 meters long and weighed more than 26 kg.
When studying the goat, Evans said the snake was unable to put its mouth on the horns of its prey.
“A friend of mine who studies this species has seen this before. Maybe they only realize that the prey is too big once they kill it? Who knows. By the time we arrived, it would never have been possible. The goat’s belly was swollen and the legs quite stiff. Still, an impressive feat for the python, ”Evans said.
He said the snake has since been released, away from the goats.
