Durban – A Durban man, using a chainsaw, suffered a partial amputation of his right arm while cutting branches.

According to Shawn Herbst of Netcare 911, they responded to the incident at a residence in the west region of Crestholme Durban.

“Reports from the scene indicate that an adult male cutting branches suffered a partial amputation of his right arm.

“The patient was treated by Netcare 911 and Medi-Tech ambulance services.

“Due to the severity of the patients’ injuries, a Netcare 911 ambulance helicopter was activated to transport the patient to the hospital for further treatment,” Herbst said.

In a separate incident in July 2019, the right hand of an Amanzimtoti man was cut off in a freak accident.

A spokesman for EMS Midlands Derrick Bank said the 44-year-old Malawian lost his right hand while building a kennel.

“The patient is believed to have been cutting wood with an electric saw to make a kennel when the incident occurred,” Banks said.

He said it is unclear about the events that led to the accident, but confirmed that police were on the scene.

“The paramedics placed a tourniquet around the arm before removing the towel to view the injury. The hand was completely severed. The paramedics covered the wound and maintained pressure to prevent further blood loss,” Banks said.
