Durban firearms dealer suspected of arming Western Cape gangs

Cape Town – The National Bureau of Illegal Firearms and Priority Violent Crime Control (NBIFCPVC) of the Cape Town Directorate of Priority Criminal Investigations (Hawks), along with a special task force in Durban, Criminal Intelligence and Police from the subway, arrested a firearms dealer on Friday for allegedly supplying firearms to gangs in Cape Town.

In a statement, Hawks spokesman Zinzi Hani said the 41-year-old gun store owner was linked to supplying firearms through a separate investigation and faces a series of charges.

“The Durban-based firearms dealer was allegedly linked to an illegal supply of firearms through his dealer to criminal gangs in the Western Cape.

“He will face various charges including murder, attempted murder, fraud, violation of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000, as well as violation of the Prevention of Organized Crime Act (POCA) 121 of 1998,” Hani said. .

He said the Hawks-led team seized 17 illegal firearms on George in transit from Johannesburg. A further investigation revealed that the seized firearms were allegedly destined for criminal gangs in Cape Town.

Hani said another 44 firearms from the suspect’s business were seized during the investigation.

“An additional forensic examination allegedly linked some of the firearms to criminal activities ranging from murder to attempted murder,” he said.

The gun shop owner is expected to appear in Worcester Magistrates Court in the Western Cape on Monday.

In an unrelated incident, an abalone poacher received heavy fines and a suspended sentence in Cape Town Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Abdurahman Rashid, a 45-year-old citizen of Tanzania, was arrested with abalone worth more than R2 million on November 11 last year.

Rashid entered into a plea and sentencing agreement with the state and was fined 12,000 rand or 12 months in prison for the first four charges. On the fifth count, he was fined 1,000 rand or two months in prison.
