The 41-year-old was arrested Thursday in a joint operation by the National Office for Illegal Firearms Control and the Directorate for Priority Investigation of Crime (DPCI, or Hawks) in Cape Town, along with Durban police. .
“The team led by the Hawks seized 17 illegal firearms in George, in transit from Johannesburg, and a further investigation revealed that those firearms were allegedly destined for Cape Town criminal gangs. Another 44 firearms were seized of their business during the investigation process, “Hawks said spokesman Zinzi Hani.
The man faces several charges, including murder, attempted murder, fraud, as well as violation of the Firearms Control Act.
“An additional forensic examination allegedly linked some of the firearms to criminal activities ranging from murder to attempted murder,” Hani said.
The man was expected to appear in Worcester Magistrates Court on Monday.
