Former SA Airways chairman Dudu Myeni surprised the state’s commission of inquiry on Thursday when he revealed the identity of a witness nicknamed “Mr. X “.
Myeni, who was also the president of Mhlathuze Water, surprised the chairman of the commission, Supreme Court Vice President Raymond Zondo, when he revealed the identity of Mr. X minutes before the lunch break.
Earlier this year, Mr. X told Judge Zondo that his company had been used by one of the firms of Myeni’s son, Thalente, to deposit R3 million.
Myeni would then demand that cash be withdrawn from Mr. X’s company account to be released to him, according to his evidence.
“I am controlling the procedures in this commission. I give them the opportunity to say something and I give everyone the opportunity to say something, ”Judge Zondo said.
He continued: “At this stage, I want to say that if there is an order that I have made, it must be respected. When we return I will listen to what you have to say, I have to reflect on what you just did ”.
Earlier, Myeni had mockingly asked, “Who is Mr. X?”
Judge Zondo explained that he was a witness and had ruled that his identity should not be disclosed and that he was convinced that there were adequate grounds for that decision.
Myeni said that he had read Mr. X’s entire file and that Judge Zondo’s office had access to the Special Investigation Unit’s investigation against him.
I’m also going to ask you stoically. This is a distraction from a family member. Mr. X (identifying him) is my family, his children are my children. He’s my brother, ”he said.
According to Myeni, there was nothing true in hiding his identity, since he was his family and his brother.
I am not going to talk about issues that belong to what the so-called Mr. X (identifying him) because of the fear that has been presented to you. This is an honest man I have known for more than 25 years, ”explained Zondo to a puzzled judge.
Judge Zondo said: “I am going to adjourn the session now to consider what should be done about what you have done.”
Myeni claimed that her statement was not intended to break any orders.
“I did not mean to say anything inappropriate or make any order to be invalid or disrespect him. My apologies, but I’m not saying it out of lack of respect, ”he said.
The hearing continues.
