Cape Town – A drug-addicted Cape Town teenager whose mother had chained him to a wall in a desperate attempt to prevent him from stealing was found murdered.
According to Asanda Manono’s family, the 19-year-old was killed by members of his family and a community in the Eastern Cape after being accused of stealing and selling a relative’s clothes.
Asanda’s family in Cape Town said they took him to a container at night where they assaulted him until he died.
Police said his body was found dumped in an open veld at Mkaphusi Location, Lady Frere on Monday night.
Eastern Cape Police spokesman Colonel Sibongile Soci said a murder case had been opened.
“The circumstances surrounding the murder of a 19-year-old whose life was found in an open veld at the Mkaphusi location, Lady Frere on Monday night, December 28, 2020, are part of the investigation.
“It is alleged that members of the community summoned the police over the body of the deceased lying in an open veld. Upon arrival, the police discovered the bruised body, ”Soci said.
Earlier this year, the Cape Times reported that, in a desperate measure to make sure her son didn’t get into trouble, Buyiswa Manono of Brown’s Farm near Philippi had him in chains.
The mother recounted how Asanda would steal anything of value, including household items from her home, or even from neighbors, to sell and feed her addiction.
Manono said she had to ask her brother to leave her the microwave, television and other electrical appliances overnight when she worked the night shift, fearing that Asanda would steal and sell them.
The teenager had survived several vigilante attacks, including when his mother and neighbors had to beg for his life after four gunmen broke into his home, wanting to kill Asanda.
Manono begged them not to kill him and paid the R900 they accused him of stealing.
“After selling all his clothes, he sold his brother’s, my Tupperware and my other belongings. He also went to the informal settlement of Ramaphosa and stole R900.
“Four old men came here armed and wanted to kill him. I was sitting here drunk and didn’t even know what was going on. I had to make a loan at work to pay these men, ”Manono said.
“If it was a rat, I would have killed it. If it was a rat, I would have gone to the Nyanga bus terminal to buy rat poison to feed it, ”he said.
At the time, Asanda said he was willing to go to rehab and start a new life in a different environment.
“I made promises to him about changing and telling him my dreams. If I can get help now, when I come back, maybe from anywhere to help, I can talk to my mother about my behavior, ”he said.
On Tuesday, his heartbroken mother said: “After all the efforts I have made to change my son’s life, losing him in this way is just terrible. It is even painful to know that some members of the family were involved in his death. “
The police have appealed to anyone who can assist the police investigation with any information that may lead to the arrest of the suspect to contact Lieutenant Colonel Sizwe Mazwi at 082 441 8358.
