Rapid testing for Covid-19 has started on the N1 near the Grasmere toll plaza as motorists return to Gauteng after the December holidays.
Police, subway cops and health workers set up tents and offered tests to motorists entering the province.
Health experts warned that the number of infections could increase in Gauteng as people return from critical areas across the country. As motorists exit the toll gate, they are screened and the free Covid-19 test is offered to people with symptoms. Up to six test stations have been installed on the side of the road.
“We are prioritizing people at hotspots. As you can see, we cannot screen everyone who goes through the toll gate. People with symptoms are offered tests,” Gauteng health spokesperson Kwara said. Kekana.
Voluntary testing is offered as part of the provincial government’s plans to address the second wave of Covid-19 infections. On the side of the road there are also free HIV tests and condoms are distributed. Starting tomorrow, in the same place, vaccination will be offered for children who have not kept their appointments.
Police are also checking vehicles for alcohol and other traffic offenses.
Similar operations are expected to take place on the other main arteries entering the province, such as the N3, N12 and N1 from Polokwane, Limpopo.
