JOHANNESBURG – Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said that while the risk of a resurgence of COVID-19 infections remains alive, South Africans should be commended for joining in the fight against the virus.

With a congratulatory tone in a video posted on his Twitter account on Saturday, Mkhize praised the country’s health workers for their efforts to help the country overcome the worst of the pandemic.

South Africa has now dropped to 10th in the count of countries with the highest number of known infections from John Hopkins University.

More than 668,000 infections were confirmed in the country with more than 16,000 lives lost.

With the country enjoying the first weekend under level 1 lockdown regulations, the minister said that people should not lower their guard.

“The pandemic continues and the numbers are still high, but I think we have overcome the increase and we should look back and thank South Africans. We have had good leadership from the president and everyone came together to put the country first. “
