JOHANNESBURG – The Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) has released what it said were the qualifications of its chief of staff following questions about the legitimacy of his appointment.
The department said that Nthabiseng Borotho has provided valuable information to a department that was at the center of political interference.
She became embroiled in a saga of post-matrix ratings after the Sunday Independent revealed earlier this year that Minister Pravin Gordhan appointed her despite failing to meet minimum criteria.
The Public Enterprises Department appears to have given in to pressure to detail how Borotho was appointed chief of staff.
In a statement, the department outlined Borotho’s career path from enrollment in 1997 to moments before Gordhan appointed her two years ago.
The department said she served in a number of government positions where she distinguished herself as a committed and competent civil servant.
In comments apparently responding to allegations that Borotho turned the ministry into a family recruitment agency by employing his half-sister, the department also admitted that his relative was appointed as a receptionist at his Cape Town office in case of emergency.
However, it is still unclear why the department took so long to clear things up when questions were raised about Borotho’s appointment last year.
The statement also said nothing about claims that Gordhan used the saga to launch an attack on those who raised the issue rather than address the concerns.
