Traffic law enforcement officials are stepping up the campaign to remove unsafe vehicles from the roads ahead of peak travel season.
According to Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) spokesman Simon Zwane, more than 1,800 vehicles have been taken off the roads to be operated on public roads with major defects that put the lives of other road users at risk.
An additional 1,465 public transport vehicles have been seized for operating against their permits and overloading.

Some of the main defects identified in the vehicles included faulty brakes, dysfunctional steering racks, slick tires and severely cracked windshields. Vehicle owners have to repair defects and have them run roadworthy tests before putting them back into operation on public roads.
“Motorists are cautioned that they run the risk of discontinuing their vehicles if they have modified the vehicles against manufacturers’ specifications,” Zwane said.
“Roadworthiness has been identified as a key focus area in this year’s holiday season road safety campaign.”
Last year, roadworthiness was a factor in 7% of fatal accidents during the holiday season, Zwane said.
“To help law enforcement agencies deal with this matter, the RTMC has purchased 19 mobile vehicle test stations and distributed them in different provinces to help identify vehicles that are not suitable for road operation. public.
“The RTMC reiterates its call for motorists to fix their vehicles before embarking on their trips and avoid overloading to reduce the number of people killed in traffic accidents,” said Zwane.
