Sowetan managed to track down Egyptian soccer journalist Ahmed Essam, who works for local publication Youm7.com, to comment on Sirino’s possible move to link up with Mosimane in North Africa.
“News [of Sirino joining Al Ahly] it is a trend throughout Egypt. From what I heard from the club, Al Ahly was trying to close the deal, but it didn’t happen until now. Pitso aims for the player to play a key role in his team next season, ” Essam said yesterday.
Interestingly, Essam acknowledges that Sirino would only adapt to the left, if he ends up in Egypt.
“I think he can only be a left-handed… I know he’s right-handed, but in his natural position, Al Ahly already have Hussein El Shahat who they bought from him. [United Arab] To Emirates’ Ein, they paid $ 5 million for him, ” Essam said.
Retired Downs star Manqoba “Shakes” Ngwenya sees Sirino’s potential shift to Al Ahly as something that would put Sundowns on the map, feeling the move would also give youngsters like Promise Mkhuma a chance to grow.
“When Patrice Motsepe bought this team, he wanted international teams to recognize our players and now it is happening. If Sirino really leaves that would be good for the Sundowns profile … it will show that we can produce great players and also the move will give players like Mkhuma the opportunity to play regularly, ” Ngwenya said.
It remains to be seen if Sirino will play when Downs takes on Cape Town in a league tie at Cape Town Stadium tonight (7:30 pm).
