Dovizioso will be leaving Ducati at the end of this weekend and will take a year off from MotoGP in 2021 with a view to returning in 2022.
He will start what could be his last MotoGP race from 12th on the grid, leaving him disappointed because he thinks his race pace is “interesting”.
“About my qualifying, I am very angry and disappointed because my pace improved in practice and my pace for the race is interesting,” said Dovizioso. “For many reasons, it was important to start in the first two rows because it is very, very difficult to overtake on this track because you always have to ride at an angle.
“There is no really hard brake and, with the characteristics of Michelin, you cannot brake too late and aggressively. As you can see, a lot of drivers made a lot of mistakes when braking, because we blocked the front end very easily with the angle and it is very, very difficult. I think if you start ahead with a fast driver you can follow him because it’s more about flowing on this track.
“If you can follow someone you can be a lot faster on most of the track. In the race, if you’re not that far out of your rhythm, you can do it. [up]. So very disappointed because what we needed was a good position on the grid. But we’ll see.
“We did not lose everything because we are fighting for [constructors’] championship with many drivers and they surround me. The start is very important because the first two corners are tight and it is almost impossible to gain a position. We have to stay focused because the speed is there. “
Although he is not a fan of the circuit layout, because he disagrees with his driving style, Dovizioso admits that the Algarve is a good place for him to finish his Ducati career.
“I was very happy to do the last race on a new track,” he added. “It’s a wonderful place, but I don’t like the layout very much, but just because of my characteristics and my style is different.
“I’m usually a strong braker, Malaysia, Japan are completely different tracks. [to Algarve] And it’s what I love But anyway, ending up here is a really nice place. “
