Police are pursuing four more suspects in the double murder of Glen and Vida Rafferty, who were shot and killed on their KwaZulu-Natal farm last month, Police Minister Bheki Cele said.

“We are glad someone showed up in court today. We are seeing four more people we are pursuing. That person was arrested four days after the incident, but we keep it [confidential] so we can take care of other business [in the case]”Cele said Monday.

He was speaking in Normadien, Newcastle, where he received a rural imbizo.

Cele addressed reporters after interacting with community members who lamented the racial tensions.

He said that they would handle all matters in a procedural manner.

“The people may be angry, but as a government we will not be driven by the anger of the people. We will be dealing with the situation.”

Cele said that problems related to the poor service provision of the local police station were being addressed.

“I’m sending a team to come investigate. We came here for the murder and [I] I’m trying to deal with all of this. “

Shot dead

Cele’s visit comes after 63-year-old farm owner Glen Rafferty, his wife, Vida, 60, and their dog were shot and killed on August 29.

The suspect allegedly ransacked the home and destroyed the cameras before fleeing in the couple’s vehicle that was later found abandoned in Elandslaagte, police said at the time.

The man was arrested by a detective from the provincial unit against organized crime in Osizweni.
