A 43-year-old man was sentenced to double life in prison for the rape and murder of his elderly neighbor in KwaZulu-Natal.
Nkosiyezwe David Gwala was sentenced by the Pietermaritzburg High Court this week for the 2019 rape and murder of his 62-year-old neighbor in Inchanga.
Police spokesman Colonel Thembeka Mbele said on December 14 that Thandi Magwaza left his home in the KaDenge area of Inchanga and did not return.
“His family opened a missing persons file at the Inchanga police station for investigation and a search was carried out.”
Mbele said that two days later, community members and police found Magwaza’s body in the bushes. He had no immediate visible injuries.
“A judicial file was opened for investigation. An autopsy was performed which revealed that the victim was raped and strangled to death. The investigation file was changed to charges of murder and rape. “
The file was assigned to a dedicated investigating officer who followed the trail to his neighbor’s home.
“Nkosiyezwe Gwala was arrested on December 22. He made several court appearances and was denied bail. They kept him behind bars until he was sentenced ”.
