The alcohol and tourism industries have made a passionate request to President Cyril Ramaphosa not to close them or impose further restrictions.
The pleas come ahead of a speech scheduled for Monday night, just days after the country officially entered a second wave of Covid-19 infections.
Industries have pledged to take a “sensible” approach during the holiday season in an attempt to safeguard lives, protect 415,000 jobs and continue to support the more than 1 million people who depend on them for their survival.
“Previous alcohol bans and prolonged restrictions on the alcohol trade resulted in the loss of some 7,400 jobs, lost sales revenue of R14.2 billion and a loss of more than R7.4 billion in taxes and duties specials only in the beer industry, “said the Beer Association of Patricia Pillay, CEO of South Africa (Basa).
“The craft brewery sector was particularly affected, with 30% of breweries closing their doors and those that managed to stay open were forced to reduce staff, resulting in the loss of hundreds of jobs.
