Don’t rewrite history: this kind of defeat never happened under Wenger

Arsenal 0-3 Aston Villa – Didn’t happen with Wenger by Dan Smith

On Sunday, Arsenal had their heaviest joint defeat in the League at the Emirates. Another stat to add along with last season’s worst result in 25 years to remind us of our decline.

However, reading subsequent articles since then, I have seen Arsene Wenger’s name come up more than, say, Aubameyang’s. Some wanted to remind people that this was the scum of the old regime.

That we shouldn’t overreact because this sort of thing was happening in the later Wenger years anyway. Has anyone else noticed that these players are never Wenger’s scum when we win?

I understand now. Some thugs will never admit that we have regressed since the French left. To do that would be to admit that he was wrong to go after the best boss in our history.

Perhaps you think it would affect your views if you recognized that grass has not been shown to be greener? It is not a debate, it is a fact. Choose any criteria used to measure a team, we have regressed. League position, creativity, style of play, our home record, not scoring in games, shots on goal, etc., backwards!

What inspired this piece is twofold.

I notice that some bullies are misleading on certain facts. Either they are too young to remember or they lie about their own agenda.

Either way, it’s not fair for the next generation of Arsenal fans to be taught that losing 3-0 to Aston Villa at home is the norm.

Arteta himself said at the first press conference, this club has values and standards that must coincide at all times. Our manager’s own words were that he would not tolerate those standards not being met.

Whether it’s the players, the owner, the coaching staff, the fans, we have to say that losing 3-0 at home to a team that finished 17th last season is simply unacceptable. Remove the marker, the performance can not be tolerated. It’s one of those results where you say ‘that can’t happen again’.

We are Arsenal, one of the biggest clubs in the world.

You can’t predict for a minute a title challenge and then just shrug and say ‘well this happened under Wenger’ just to feel better. First of all, it is false, but secondary, where are your standards? That result is unacceptable, almost like our bottom line.

To put into context how unprecedented the result of this weekend was; In Emirates Stadium’s 14 years of existence, that was only the fifth time in the League that we lost by a 3-goal margin (the heaviest).
The other 4 went twice for Man City and Chelsea (one of which was under Freddie).

So anyone suggesting under Wenger, we were being humiliated at home to sides outside of the top 4, it’s a total fabrication.

This weekend, of course, was our second loss at home in 4 league losses. So now let’s challenge the notion that this was happening with Wenger. Arteta has already lost the same number of league games at home as we have in Wenger’s last two years.

In fact, in the 14-year history of the EPL, only one season we lost more than 3 league games (4).

So, losing 3-0 at home to Aston Villa,
Finishing eighth,
Finishing in our worst position in 25 years,

None of that is acceptable.

We’ve regressed since Mr. Wenger left. Only when we begin to accept the problem will we find a solution.

Be nice in the comments …
