Mpumalanga police say they have been “shocked” by two cases of domestic violence in Carolina.
In the early hours of Friday, a woman and her two children, ages one and seven, were shot dead. His nine-year-old daughter is in serious condition at the hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds. Nearby was the body of the woman’s husband, with a pistol at his side.
Police rushed to the scene after a relative reported him, who became concerned that he could not communicate with them, said police spokesman Colonel Donald Mdhluli.
“[On] Upon arrival, four members of the same family were found lying in a pool of blood with gunshot wounds. There were no signs of life. The woman, between 35 and 40 years old, her children … as well as her husband, 40, were certified dead by paramedics. Their 9-year-old daughter was taken to the hospital for medical treatment, “Mdhluli said.
Preliminary investigations suggest the man used his licensed firearm to kill his family before shooting himself, Mdhluli said.
“However, the police are continuing their investigation,” he added.
On Tuesday, another incident of domestic violence occurred in Carolina. A woman and her two children, aged five and seven, were reportedly burned by her husband, 35, at their home in the Nkanini municipality.
Police believe the man allegedly locked his wife and children in his hut before pouring gasoline on it and setting fire to the structure.
“Due to the raging flames, the man was also burned. The three victims were rescued by their neighbors after screaming in anguish and were later taken to hospital for medical treatment. Police were notified of the incident and [an] an attempted murder case was opened, “Mdhluli said.
The man was arrested and is currently under police surveillance. He is expected to appear in court soon.
