  • Anesthetist Dr. Abdulhay Munshi was reportedly shot and killed in Johannesburg on Wednesday.
  • Munshi and pediatric surgeon Dr. Peter Beale are charged with wrongful death in the death of 10-year-old Zayyan Sayed shortly after an operation last year.
  • Police were investigating a murder case after a 57-year-old man was shot and killed in Norwood.

Anesthetist Dr. Abdulhay Munshi, the co-defendant in a wrongful death case along with pediatric surgeon Dr. Peter Beale, was shot and killed in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

Police spokesman Brig.Mathapelo Peters confirmed that a murder case was under investigation after unknown suspects shot a 57-year-old man Wednesday afternoon at the Norwood Police Station.

“The case will be investigated by a multidisciplinary team on the immediate activation of the 72-hour Response Plan to detect those responsible.”

Peters did not reveal or confirm the identity of the victim, but News24 reliably understands from two sources that it was Munshi.

News24 was on the scene hours after he was shot and spoke with witnesses who said they heard four shots before the suspects fled.

A witness, who did not want to be identified, said that a car collided with Munshi’s vehicle and that, when he got out, he was shot in the chest.

Speaking to News24, a security guard, who wished to remain anonymous, said that nothing was removed from Munshi’s car as his cell phone, tablet and valuables were still inside.

Forensic officials were seen processing the scene and dusting fingerprints, with the body nearby.

In a video taken by a witness shortly after the incident, which News24 has seen, a distraught witness said he saw the suspects in a blue BMW without license plates.

Munshi and Beale were taken to court last year following the death of Mohammad Sayed’s 10-year-old son following an operation with Beale.

Zayyaan Sayed died in October 2019 at Netcare’s Park Lane Clinic hours after undergoing surgery.

The court case was in an early stage and had been postponed until November 16, according to the Daily Dispatch.

Condolences reached Munshi on social media Wednesday night.
