While most companies were trying to stay afloat for the past few months, DJ Sbu (Sibusiso Leope) and his business partners at MoFaya were planning an expansion the likes of which are rarely seen by municipal startups.
Speaking at the big announcement of MoFaya’s launch of 12 new carbonated soda flavors in Johannesburg on Tuesday, Leope reflected on how excited he was when his business partner, Siphiwe Likhuleni Shongwe, approached him with the idea for the brand.
In Leope’s mind, he would have been an instant millionaire in a year, yet as he’s figured out the hard way, it takes a lot more than that, even when you’re one of the country’s most beloved personalities.
“It became the hardest thing I had to do in my life, but I’m glad I got involved. No matter how difficult the journey was, I am so blessed to have met this brother, ”Leope added, before mentioning some of the financial struggles he and Shongwe faced in the early days.
Between those struggles there was a setback that nearly caused his business to close down. Someone Leope and Shongwe planned to do business with allegedly ran away with shares worth 5 million rand.
Leope refuses to name names and claims that he has never seen the culprit again, but says that the thief knows who he is and what he did and that that is enough for Leope.
“What we say up front here is not the unique story of MoFaya, it is the unique story of many small businesses in South Africa. It’s the unique story of many small businesses in South Africa that don’t have a famous face, that don’t have their headquarters in Rosebank, that don’t have relationships … “
Seven years later, the couple finally have some kind of security that allows them to look firmly into the future.
So what’s next for MoFaya?
Together with its new distribution partners, Liquor On The Run, MoFaya is looking to make its way to taxi ranks, supermarkets and spaza stores across the country.
Many of the soft drink names and the four main variants of the MoFaya energy drink are an ode to artists such as Brown Dash, Robbie Malinga, Mzekezeke (who has been theorized to be Leope’s alter ego) with whom Leope has worked on the past.
“I had to pay tribute to the people I have worked with because it is my story, it is the story of my life and they are part of it.”
As a strong advocate for side hustle and bustle, Leope urged individuals and store owners who want to become distributors and resellers to head over to his website to find out where exactly they can get stock.
After introducing his new range of soft drinks, Leope addressed the health community, who have noted his concern about the amount of sugar in MoFaya drinks.
“Don’t forget to mention the health community, we have listened to you, we are currently working on your health products. We’re working on your sports drinks, we’re working on your water, we’re working on that healthy MoFaya drink for you. We listen when you speak. “
“We also don’t want obesity. Our sugar levels are correct. Low sugar levels, but still tasty. “
What’s next for DJ Sbu?
“Growth” seems to be the name of this chapter in Leope’s story, as another of his babies, Massiv Metro, has new beginnings on the horizon.
After announcing a move to a new location in Randburg, Leope invited corporate and government advertisers to approach Massiv Metro to purchase ad space as the company enters this new chapter with a better understanding of the strong audience they have built to through their infiltration of taxi ranks. and taxis.
In December, Leope, in his capacity as DJ and co-founder of Massiv Metro, will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest broadcast of a music radio show in history.
The current record is just over 100 hours and he plans to spend more than 300 hours between December 15 and December 31, 2020 in an effort to raise funds to establish a digital entrepreneurship academy.
Since he is passionate about entrepreneurship and imparts that knowledge to others, we asked DJ Sbu to leave aspiring entrepreneurs with some nuggets of wisdom;
He began by urging entrepreneurs to set up their business / life so that they can have multiple sources of income as they grow.
He also advised start-up entrepreneurs looking to expand their businesses.
Above all, however? “Get started guys just get started God [God] will provide on the fly. “
