The City of Johannesburg Public Safety Disaster Management Center has issued a Level 2 impact-based warning for potential severe thunderstorms in parts of Johannesburg on Wednesday between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m.
The center highlights a high risk of mild to severe impact at various locations around Gauteng. Predicts that storm outbreaks may be accompanied by intense lightning, flash flooding, reduced visibility while driving, including damaging winds.
This could cause damage to informal, formal and commercial structures.
The center asks locals to be on the lookout for changing conditions and provided some safety precautions.
- Don’t seek shelter under the trees
- Be careful not to cross low flooded bridges.
- Try to stay indoors and watch out for potential tree collapses
- The center also advised locals to follow official and trusted emergency social media accounts to receive reliable information.
The center has forecast that the thunderstorm formations could peak at around 5 p.m. Wednesday.
The center’s warning follows a warning from the South African Weather Service on Tuesday, alerting Gauteng residents of possible severe thunderstorms.
Forecaster Kgologelo Mahlangu said there was a 60% chance of thunderstorms from Wednesday to Saturday and the weather service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning in parts of Gauteng and neighboring cities.
The storms are expected to arrive with possible flooding in low-lying areas, with serious interruptions in travel flow due to visibility.
Temperatures peaked at 25 ° C for Pretoria, 22 ° C for Johannesburg and 24 ° C for Vereeniging on Wednesday.
More thunderstorms were expected Thursday afternoon with temperatures rising to 25 ° C for Pretoria, 21 ° C for Johannesburg and 22 ° C for Vereeniging.
There was also a 60% chance for Friday, with highs of 18 ° C for Johannesburg, 21 ° C for Pretoria and 20 ° C for Vereeniging.
Confirming a wet weekend ahead, Mahlangu said the cloudy sky should clear on Sunday.
