JOHANNESBURG – Following the global reveal of the revamped Nissan Navara on Thursday, Nissan South Africa has released more details on its plans for the local market.
During an online press conference, Nissan SA Marketing Manager Kabelo Rabotho confirmed that the new bakkie will go into production at Nissan’s Rosslyn plant in Gauteng during the first quarter of 2021.
Nissan also confirmed that a much wider range of derivatives will be offered to South African buyers. The current imported Navara is only available in high-spec crew cab models, but the locally built range will also include a single cab body style in addition to the current crew cab format.
Nissan SA also plans to offer two additional powertrains, with the current 140 kW 2.3-liter twin-turbo diesel engine and a more affordable 120 kW single-turbo version.
Single cab models will also be available with a gasoline engine, Nissan says, without providing further details.
Depending on the derivative, buyers will also be able to choose between manual and automatic transmissions, as well as 4×2 and 4×4 configurations.
Additional export markets for SA
Local production of the new Nissan Navara will also usher in an enhanced export program, bringing the models to 42 markets in sub-Saharan Africa. When asked about possible exports to Europe, given that the Barcelona plant currently producing Navaras is rumored to be closed, Nissan said it was too early to comment.
