JOHANNESBURG – With the African National Congress (ANC) admitting that a mistake was made in using an Air Force plane to carry out party functions in Zimbabwe, there are still calls for President Cyril Ramaphosa to release details of the report by Defense Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Ngqakula on the matter.
The minister took the ANC delegation to the neighboring country last week, on her way to meet with her counterpart.
The president had given the minister 48 hours from Friday to explain himself, and the presidency said Ramaphosa was studying the report.
The ruling party apologized for its actions and said it would reimburse the state for expenses incurred by its delegation.
The admission of irregularities by the ANC does not exempt the president from making a decision on the conduct of the defense minister; in fact, there was still interest in his reasons for allowing his comrades to fly him on a state plane.
Last week, the president said it was in the interest of good governance and the prudent and ethical use of state assets that the minister provide a report on the circumstances surrounding the flight and the passenger list.
That report is on the President’s desk and the Presidency said it would comment on it once it had considered its content.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance has called for the report to be released, saying that action must be taken against those on the plane.
The party has also accused those who traveled of disobeying blocking regulations by failing to isolate themselves after the trip, something the ruling party has denied, saying that all those who traveled were now in quarantine.
