The referee for the 1990 World Cup final criticized Argentine legend Diego Maradona’s regular attacks on him in the past 30 years, calling him a “despicable” person.

West Germany defeated Argentina 1-0 in Rome in a grumpy game in which the South American team finished with just nine players, and the Europeans scored a late penalty kick to lift the World Cup.

Uruguayan referee Edgardo Codesal, based in Mexico for more than 40 years, has regularly been the focus of verbal attacks by Maradona for his handling of the match.

Codesal spoke about the final in recent days, explaining in an interview on the Tirando Paredes show that he could have sent Maradona even before the kickoff for insulting the crowd, which booed the Argentine national anthem.

The former referee stated that he could have shown Maradona another red after Pedro Monzón’s sending in the 65th minute, to which the Argentine star claimed that the referee had been sent by FIFA to steal them, according to Codesal.

“I could have sent him there too,” said Codesal. “I had to think about it because of the player he was … But as a person? He’s one of the worst people I’ve ever met in my life.”

Codesal wrote on Twitter that after the interview he had received negative messages, but did not go back in his ranking of Maradona.

“Following the wave of comments, insults [going back 30 years] and yearning for my children and grandchildren to die from COVID[-19] to see me suffer because I said that Maradona is despicable, see the definition: he is not worthy of appreciation and esteem ” Codesal wrote. “For me it is not [worthy of appreciation]. I said he was a brilliant player, but as a person he is despicable. “

Codesal’s handling of the final has long been a matter of debate in Argentina.

Monzón was the first player to be sent off in a World Cup final when he dived at Jurgen Klinsmann, while West Germany also received a penalty for Roberto Sensini’s entry into Rudi Voller. Andreas Brehme went ahead to score the winner in the 85th minute.

Gustavo Dezotti was sent two minutes later for a challenge at Jurgen Kohler.

Maradona has never forgotten the match, regularly mentioning Codesal, including in 2018 in Querétaro as manager of the Mexican team Dorados de Sinaloa. When they told him that the former referee lives in Querétaro, the Argentine replied: “Is this the land of thieves?”
