Deputy Police Commissioner Bonang Mgwenya fired on corruption charges

National Police Commissioner General Khehla John Sitole has removed Deputy National Police Commissioner Bonang Mgwenya following convictions of his alleged involvement in crimes.

Mgwenya appeared briefly in Palm Ridge Magistrates Court on Monday after the Directorate of Investigation arrested her on charges related to corruption, fraud, theft and money laundering.

“Following due process, the national commissioner initially suspended Mgwenya on October 15, during which time a departmental investigation was carried out,” said national police spokesman Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo.

Subsequently, Mgwenya was indicted, convicted and summarily dismissed [on Thursday].

“The national commissioner remains steadfast in his efforts to clear the SAPS of any form of wrongdoing by members of all ranks,” Naidoo said.
