JOHANNESBURG – The Department of Home Affairs is working on an urgent plan to avoid a repeat of the drama at the Beitbridge border post when the Christmas season ends.
The department finally managed to clear a traffic jam on the busy border that saw people camping out for days.

Siya Qoza of the Department of Internal Affairs said that after an intervention by the government and law enforcement agencies, the Beitbridge border was now easily accessible.
“It’s still normal. The situation now is that even the backlog with trucks has cleared.”

While all was clear at the moment, there is the possibility of major congestion when tourists return to South Africa in the coming weeks. Qoza said the department was now working on a plan to avoid that.
“We have a plan on how we are going to manage the return of people. The lessons from last week are being incorporated into that plan. Later this week, we will communicate that plan.”
The delay at the border with Zimbabwe has been largely attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic, improved restrictions and a lack of preparedness on the part of the government to enforce them.
