We, as residents of Reservoir Hills, are confident that you are aware of this informal settlement, its location, the current issues facing the informal community, and the risks of violent protest action for the residents of District 23.
As the Executive Mayor of eThekwini Municipality, responsibility from the perspective of security, good governance and the provision of acceptable services by your municipality rests directly with your leadership.
The actions taken by your team are well thought out and planned so that all eventualities and events are taken into account in moments of protest action for the provision of services.
We learned last week that your municipality removed the illegal connections from this settlement and that there was resistance from informal residents of Quarry Road.
Therefore, knowing that such actions resort to protest actions, we will safely assume that the Municipality would have plans to ensure the safety of the residents of District 23.
However, on Monday the lives of the residents of District 23 were in danger due to the violent protest action of the residents of this informal settlement.
The protest action started at 4 am.
You would have seen the media coverage and circulating videos of what happened in Reservoir Hills.
This certainly does not bode well for the eThekwini Municipality and highlights how it handles and responds to situations like these that are constantly coming up.
Reservoir Hills residents request an urgent meeting with you, the executive mayor of eThekwini Township.
Those attending this meeting with the Presidents of the respective Civic Corps and Community Activists.
It is extremely important that this meeting call is to meet with you, the Mayor and not with any of your representatives.
In the past we have requested a meeting with you, but instead a representative from your office, a Mr. Sabelo, was sent to meet with representatives from District 23 and none of the pertinent issues discussed were resolved.
Cllr Nala, District Attorney, PR Cllr Sagar and his Cllr Sabelo designated as PR Cllr to assist Cllr Busi with the operation of Reservoir Hills were unable to achieve a resolution to the issues raised and we are now seeking their input in a meeting. with the Representatives of the Civic Corps as a priority.
On Monday, residents of District 23 were subjected to violence that left many injured.
A bus and cars were set on fire, a vehicle, including SAPS and POP vehicles, were stoned and residents sustained injuries from the thrown stones.
We were taken hostage in our area when protesters blocked entrances and exits. The Reservoir Hills Mall and other businesses were looted.
Such acts of violation of property, injury to innocent residents, and lawlessness cannot and will not be tolerated by the residents of District 23.
We request a written response to our letter no later than 12:00 on Wednesday, October 14, 2020.
Sincerely,
Mr. Pravin Gounder
