The news was confirmed in a press release on Friday morning.
Professional rugby players in the country had until midnight Thursday, the end of a three-week window, to drop their existing contracts with their unions.
It was a clause agreed by SA Rugby Industry, MyPlayers and the South African Organization of Rugby Employers (Sareo) last month as part of SA Rugby’s efforts to reduce costs in the face of the global coronavirus pandemic.
Marx is expected to join Japan’s Kubota Spears full time after having spent the beginning of 2020 at the club in what was termed ‘sabbatical’ at the time.
The Lions also confirmed that young and exciting winger Tyrone Green, midfielder Shaun Reynolds, loose forward Ruan Vermaak and long-distance coach Neil de Bruin were dating.
“The Lions Rugby Company would like to take this opportunity to thank all of its staff and players for understanding and accepting the difficult and challenging times that COVID-19 imposed on them,” the franchise said in a statement.
“You really need special people to make a special place and the Lions family will always stay true to what they stand for, even in difficult times.”
CEO Rudolf Straeuli wished the players the best.
“There is always a great sense of loss and sadness when we lose family members. We wish them well on their journey and we thank them for some very special moments they spent with the Lions,” said Straeuli.
