JOHANNESBURG – Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga said that while she was pleased with the progress made so far by the provinces regarding their reopening plans, the department still needed confirmation of the deliveries of personal protective equipment ( PPE).

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has called for patience as it works to assess state readiness across the country.

On Thursday, he said he needed more time before he could report specific details about the resumption of teaching and learning.

Motshekga said a decision on when schools would be opened in the country has yet to be finalized as several provinces have yet to receive personal protective equipment.

It is understood that some provinces have reported delays due to problems with suppliers, which has resulted in the cancellation of contracts.

The minister said during a meeting on Monday that it was agreed that officials would use this week to finalize pending COVID-19 essentials before the schools reopen.

Motshekga is expected to hold a special meeting next week with MECs and department heads, where President Cyril Ramaphosa’s speech, among other topics, will be discussed before updating the nation on the sector’s final plans.
