The department said it was working with law enforcement authorities to investigate the matter and the extent of the leak.

The Department of Basic Education said it was disappointed by the recent leak of the test, which poses a threat to the credibility of the public test.

Elijah Mhlanga from the department: “If such a sensitive document leaves the department without our knowing it, it means that something went wrong somewhere and someone will have to be punished.”

Mhlanga said initial investigations indicated that the leak was only shared among a small group of students in Gauteng and Limpopo via WhatsApp.

“We mean it is not a national thing. Our initial research indicates that it is limited to a few students in Gauteng and Limpopo.”

The department said it hoped the paper leakage was not widespread, which could lead to a crisis.
