The Department of Basic Education (DBE) says it is deeply concerned about the impact that the second wave of the Covid-10 pandemic will have both on the margin of the 2020 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams and in the upcoming academic year.

Department Director General (DG) Mathanzima Mweli shared an update on the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the basic education sector on Wednesday.

He says he was “extremely alarmed” by the passing of teachers as the country battled the second wave of the pandemic under tight level three regulations.

“They come from the same community and from civil society in general where the virus is resurgent,” Mweli said.

He said the immediate impact of this would be felt on the matriculation exam scores.

45,000 examiners are expected to begin scoring the 2020 matric final exams on January 4, 2021.

Teachers are expected to return to school on January 25, 2021 and students on January 27, 2021

According to Mweli, the DBE will comply with all closure regulations at dialing centers, increase the number of monitors at dial-up locations, and visit dial-up centers across the country to inform the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshega. , what was happening on the ground.
