JOHANNESBURG – The Department of Basic Education (DBE) announced Monday night that it was launching an investigation into a Test 2 Physical Science exam that was leaked before the morning test began.

In the same month, a Math Paper 2 exam was leaked before matrices sat down to write, the Board of Education said 12th graders in eight provinces may have had access to a leaked math essay.

The document was initially believed to have leaked between grades 12 in Limpopo and Gauteng. But now it has been discovered that the leak was much more extensive.

A task force is investigating the matter together with the Hawks.

“The investigations are at an advanced stage and details on the progress of the investigation will be made public at an appropriate time while areas of potential areas of weakness are identified. In addition to this, the department has also sent teams to the provinces to recheck security systems. The CEM still expressed concern that the leaks were causing disruptions to a system already experiencing challenges due to COVID-19, ”the department said in a statement.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga said: “It is unfortunate that people continue to be involved in something like this even though the consequences can be dire. We condemn in the strongest terms the conduct of individuals who undermine the integrity of the exam because it causes incalculable stress on students who expect to leave the school system with an honest exam pass, not associated with cheating. “
