A man has drowned at the mouth of the Gwaing River near George in the Western Cape.
The National Maritime Rescue Institute (NSRI) received reports that a person had problems in the water at 3:11 p.m. Saturday. They responded with two rescue boats and swimmers, and alerted emergency personnel.
Once on the scene, the search began for the 33-year-old man who had disappeared underwater while swimming, said NSRI Wilderness station commander Garth Dominy.
“It appears that while a group of people were enjoying a day at the beach, one member of the group had problems when they got caught in rip currents at low tide,” Dominy said.
NSRI rescue swimmers were deployed to the water to conduct a sweep line free dive search while a search of the surface water and shoreline proceeded.
“A police dive unit was activated. During the search, rescue swimmers from NSRI located the man’s body underwater and the body was recovered from shore,” Dominy said.
He was pronounced dead once on land. The police have opened an investigation file.
