Cape Town – Vice President David Mabuza will face tough questions in Parliament regarding the looting of Covid-19 funds and the crisis facing Eskom.

Mabuza’s appearance at the National Council of Provinces on Thursday comes after he was absent from previous sessions due to health problems.

Mabuza confirmed during the post-NEC briefing on Monday that he had just returned to work after feeling unwell.

Mabuza had previously told deputies that he was treated in Russia for poor health a few years ago.

Some of the questions that Mabuza must answer relate to the looting of Covid-19 funds.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has instructed various investigative agencies to investigate the looting of funds allocated for Covid-19.

The Special Investigation Unit is investigating a number of departments and companies involved in acts of corruption.

The government announced a R500 billion stimulus package to combat the spread of Covid-19, but some of the funds were allegedly stolen.

Mabuza also faces questions from NCOP members about the crisis at Eskom.

Mabuza chairs a committee that deals with the electricity company.

Eskom admitted to the standing appropriations committee on Wednesday that its debt had increased from R440bn to R448bn.

The government made the decision a year ago to split Eskom into three entities to deal with its cash crisis and start generating revenue.
