CAPE TOWN – Emergency rescue authorities in Cape Town City are working to determine the number of houses destroyed by a massive fire in the informal Taiwanese settlement of Khayelitsha.
The fire broke out last night and more than 50 firefighters were dispatched to the scene in windy conditions.
It is not yet clear how many people have been affected.
The Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service said no injuries or deaths have been reported.
“Although the strong winds posed a challenge for the firefighters, they managed to contain and extinguish the fire around 25 minutes after 5 am. A firefighter was taken to the hospital shortly after 1 in the morning because he was suffering from muscle spasms, ”spokesman Jermaine Carelse said, adding that numerous structures were destroyed.
