CAPE TOWN – The Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Friday that while it supported gay rights, it was against the ongoing illegal occupation of a Camps Bay mansion by a group of queer activists.
A group of seven activists called #WeSeeYou staged a protest at the luxury home after it was formally booked for just last weekend.
But they didn’t go away saying that they would stay there indefinitely. Friday was her fifth unpaid day in an effort to bring attention to issues related to land and housing.
DA spokesperson for small business development Zakhele Mbhele said they supported Airbnb’s demand that the occupants leave the premises on Friday night.
Mbhele said those who participated in the sit-in were not the self-described victims, but were undermining the legitimate struggle of many to promote LGBTQIA + rights.
“We cannot condone this method and this criminal action of occupying the home because it is hypocritical to pretend to advance a rights-based agenda by violating the rights of others,” he said.
Mbhele said the group’s actions were polluting that fight and putting its own interests above those of the property owner and the tourism and hospitality industry.
She added that while the party respected her desire to highlight the plight of vulnerable queer people, women and children, illegally occupying someone else’s property completely distracts from her goal.
“As DA, we must take a principled stand to defend and defend property rights and the security of private property,” said Mbhele.
