Western Cape Transport MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela has been re-elected as the provincial leader of the DA after defeating the president of the legislature Masizole Mnqasela in a fierce battle for control of the party in the only province he governs.

This comes after the men engaged in a forceful battle that included accusations of an assassination plot directed against Madikizela.

Madikizela was re-elected in a virtual elective congress on Saturday.

Before congress, he was accused of conspiring with gangs to assassinate Mnqasela. He was acquitted Friday after a prosecutor’s investigation by the federal legal commission.

Speaking after her election, Madikizela called for unity as the party heads toward local government elections next year.

“I hope we can see, comrades, what the members of the AD are telling us: they have created a team that they believe will take this province forward and we must make sure … we unite because we do not have an election.

“We have to come together as a party if we are serious about saving SA and if we are serious about the government of the Western Cape, if we want to make sure that 2021 comes, we will rule all the municipalities of the Western Cape.”

Madikizela said that the prosecution had to be stable and that during the campaign for leadership the party focused internally, and some of the battles turned out to be unpleasant.

He called on members to build a stable DA that is attractive to voters, beginning with the by-elections to be held in the province on December 9.

“Immediately when we return next year, we must start working. The elections have started with colleagues, we must ensure that we are on the ground. We have to make sure we interact with all of our voters because we have a daunting task, ”Madikizela said.

He said the DA in the Western Cape has been in government for a long time and the announcement of a downgrade to garbage status for the country meant that it would be more difficult for the party to govern the municipalities it aims to win.

“I think the best we can do is be on the ground, interacting with our voters on a regular basis so they can understand the challenges we face.”
