JOHANNESBURG – The Democratic Alliance (DA) filed a criminal complaint against the delegation of the African National Congress (ANC) that boarded Zimbabwe on an air force plane.
There was a public outcry after party members flew in the air force plane, which was carrying Defense Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula to Zimbabwe for a meeting with her counterpart.
The party has admitted its guilt in the matter, saying it would reimburse the state for the expenses incurred by the delegation.
But President Cyril Ramaphosa had requested an explanation from Mapisa-Nqakula, on which he has not given a public response.
The deputy district attorney, Kobus Marais, said that state resources were allocated more to the duties of the ANC and not to the work of the minister.
“Clearly, a trip of more than 24 hours was certainly not necessary for a half-hour meeting. So the rest went all to the political work of the party and that is a clear violation of his oath of office as well. Offering to return the money is good in terms of budget and cost, but it is not acceptable in terms of the law.
