The Democratic Alliance (DA) has filed criminal charges against the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Julius Malema, and his member of parliament, Nazier Paulsen, for inciting violence after their posts on social media last week in which they urged their members to “prepare” to “attack.”
This after Malema and Paulsen tweeted images of machine guns following public violence from farmers who stormed Senekal Magistrates Court in Free State last week in an attempt to confront suspects accused of killing the manager of the farm Brendin Horner, 22 years old. Malema and Paulsen hinted that their members should. prepare to attack.
Captioning a video showing the farmers’ attack, Malema said his members would be present at the next court appearance on Friday, adding that “magwala a chechele morago (cowards move back)! The fighters attack! “

This was followed by an image posted on Twitter by Paulsen where he is standing with a machine gun. The image had the caption “Get Ready!”

But this was a “reckless attempt” by the Red Berets to escalate the violence, said Chief Prosecutor Natasha Mazzone, who filed criminal charges at Cape Town’s central police station on Monday.
“The EFF is showing its true colors. Malema and his thugs do not respect the rule of law, their only contribution to the South African political landscape has been chaos, violence and a clear attempt to destroy democratic institutions. “
The party had referred Malema and Paulsen to the parliament’s ethics committee last week for an investigation into the social media posts.
“The ball is now in parliament and in the police court to hold Malema and his band of quasi-revolutionaries accountable for their blatant incitement to violence. For too long, the EFF has gotten away with this kind of behavior, which has increasingly emboldened them to say and do what they want, “said Mazzone.
Meanwhile, the trial against Malema and EFF MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi begins Tuesday at Randburg Magistrates Court.
This after minority rights group AfriForum pressured the National Prosecutor’s Office to prosecute EFF leaders for allegedly assaulting a senior police officer.
