CAPE TOWN – The Democratic Alliance (DA) said it was disappointed by a ruling advocating the closure of beaches along the Garden Route, but welcomed changes to the beach’s hours of operation from 6 a.m. to 7 pm.

The Western Cape Superior Court ruled Tuesday in favor of the beaches along the resort being closed until January 3.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the move last week in an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19.

The same regulation applies to the beaches of the Eastern Cape, where the Kouga Municipality has also appealed to the courts to have this annulled.

Party leader John Steenhuisen said they remain deeply concerned that the widespread closure of Garden Route beaches during the holiday season will have far-reaching and devastating consequences for local economies.

“We obviously respect the ruling, but we understand that this ruling continues to be a devastating blow to the thousands of small businesses along the Garden Route, who now face the risk of collapsing or having to let key members of staff go.”

He said the country’s response to the coronavirus must always take into account the delicate balance between lives and livelihoods. Adding that the country cannot withstand any regulation, which damages the economy and takes citizens away from their means to earn an honest living safely.
