DA deputy files charges against KZN prime minister for ‘illegal meeting’, province dismisses as ‘fake news’

Member of Parliament for the Democratic Alliance (DA), Dianne Kohler Barnard, has filed a charge against KwaZulu-Natal Prime Minister Sihle Zikalala, calling it an “illegal meeting,” but the province has dismissed the claim.

Barnard claimed Monday that Zikalala held what she believes “to have been an illegal meeting at Clairwood Hospital around 10:30” on Monday.

In his affidavit, Barnard further stated that the meeting was a “demonstration: to remove essential workers from their vital obligations in wards, ambulances and patrols.”

However, the KZN provincial government dismissed the district attorney’s claims about its Covid-19 response plans as “false news.”

“The KZN provincial government notes with dismay the statement of the district attorney alleging that it had organized a rally and wishes to clarify to citizens that the prime minister and members of the provincial command council carried out routine work by the command council and visited Clairwood Hospital, “the province said in a statement Monday.

During the visit, the prime minister released thousands of N95 masks, the statement added.

“He then took the opportunity to appreciate and motivate front-line personnel, who are at the forefront of the trenches in the fight against the spread of Covid-19.

“This was not a meeting as contemplated by the blocking regulations, but an ongoing routine work to monitor the province’s readiness to respond to Covid-19,” the province added.

The provincial government reiterated that “spreading or spreading false news to grab headlines during the shutdown is a violation of regulations.”

News24 has contacted KZN SAPS for comment. It will be added once received.
