The ANC in Parliament accused the prosecutor of acting in bad faith after the opposition party participated in consultative meetings with President Cyril Ramaphosa about the coronavirus outbreak.
The ANC caucus, led by the head of the ANC parliamentary parliament, Pemmy Majodina, issued a scathing statement, criticizing the country’s main opposition for its “timely” and “irrational” call for the reopening of the economy.
The ANC committee in Parliament held a virtual meeting with Ramaphosa on Saturday, where he condemned DA leader John Steenhuisen’s call to reopen the economy and end the blockade.
Majodina’s advisor and acting spokesperson, Nomfanelo Kota, questioned why the prosecutor behaved as if he did not have the President’s ear.
“They are given the necessary space to express their points of view, it is not like when they are given the possibility to refuse. They are not standing aside and, in those meetings, I think they are given the opportunity to present his case, “said Kota.

She said that since the first Covid-19 case in South Africa was reported, Ramaphosa had tried to trust opposition parties, meeting with them regularly to update them and listen to their ideas on how to navigate the crisis.
“One cannot help but wonder if the parties did not participate in those meetings in good faith,” he questioned.
South Africa is currently under Level 4 blockade regulations. This is part of the government’s efforts to combat the spread of the new coronavirus, which has infected millions and killed hundreds of thousands worldwide.
While some restrictions have been eased since early May in an attempt to allow some economic activity to resume, the DA has expressed concern about the adjusted model.

Steenhuisen said the approach to the pandemic was flawed and warned that failure to reopen the economy would have serious consequences for the country.
Over the weekend, the ANC described Steenhuisen’s calls as “suicidal.”

“The levels of incitement by the DA leader and calls for civil disobedience cannot go unnoticed and remain reckless and childish,” Majodina said in the statement.
The head of the ANC’s parliamentary parliament also suggested that the opposition leader pay attention to the DA-governed Western Cape, which has the highest number of Covid-19 cases and deaths in the country.
“The politicization of Covid-19 interventions smacks of high levels of political immaturity and should be dismissed with the contempt they deserve,” Majodina said.
