The night of the long knives is looming for President Cyril Ramaphosa as his detractors tighten the noose around his neck with a concerted plot with an anti-corruption label that they believe he will not be able to escape.
Detractors of Ramaphosa were said to be hatching a plan to turn this weekend’s ANC national executive committee (NEC) meeting into a palace coup against him. This as the NEC was expected to hold an unprecedented discussion focused specifically on the corruption that plagues the ruling party.
An ANC source said the sudden resurgence of former ANC Youth League Vice President and Nelson Mandela Bay Councilor Andile Lungisa to push for an investigation into the corruption allegations against Ramaphosa was neither a surprise nor a coincidence.
“This is a calculated plan for dealing with Comrade Cyril. Lungisa has a mission: he has been tasked with leading the charge from below, ”said the source.
Lungisa wrote to the ANC’s top six this week calling for Ramaphosa to be investigated by the party’s integrity committee for allegedly buying votes at the Nasrec conference in 2017. He alleged that Ramaphosa was funded, implying that the president used crooked means to be elected as ANC. President.
Political analyst Professor Andrew Duvenhage said there was no doubt that Ramaphosa was under attack and that it would not be a surprise if his opponents asked for a vote of no confidence on him over the corruption of personal protective equipment and his campaign problems. electoral pre-Nasrec.
But, he added, “Ramaphosa is not clean, they know it and they want to use this against him. But without a doubt this is a counterattack to divert attention from themselves ”.
With the ANC Youth League now dead, Jacob Zuma’s camp identified Lungisa as an ideal replacement to use in their fighting campaign. Lungisa is not the first to raise the issue of vote buying. He echoed statements by the ANC’s staunch Tokyo Sexwale and Human Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu, who are believed to be against Ramaphosa.
Duvenhage said the Ace Magashule-Zuma faction’s claim that Ramaphosa allegedly bought votes in Nasrec would not stand because both sides were guilty of using the same tactics to gain advantage.
The ANC source said that former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede would be used as a decoy to deal with Ramaphosa. She could be “sacrificed” by Zuma’s supporters at the NEC in order to strengthen the case against Ramaphosa.
Political analyst Xolani Dube said Gumede would not go anywhere because she had the backing of Magashule supporters. She said political disputes within the ANC allowed corruption suspects to roam freely at all levels. The analyst said no drama should be expected at the NEC because both sides were made up of corruption. She said the best they would do was reach consensus and let the corruption continue.
“The meeting is about closing ranks, smoking the pipe of peace and letting everyone steal in their little corner. There will be consensus to protect each other. At the end of the day, no one will be responsible. These guys need each other because everyone is involved, ”Dube said.
