Cyberpunk 2077 received rave reviews

Critics are raving about Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt SA’s highly anticipated RPG that features actor Keanu Reeves. But despite eight years of development and three release delays, the critical consensus is that the game could have used more time in the oven.

While most video game companies release new games every year or two, this is CD Projekt’s first major release since 2015’s The Witcher 3, raising the stakes for the Polish gaming giant. Before the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 on December 10, reviews of the games were posted on Monday, praising its ambition and emotional weight, but criticizing the excess of errors.

Gene Park of the Washington Post called the writing an “exciting and engaging journey” but regretted that it is “fraught with flaws.” IGN reviewer Tom Marks described it as “one of the most exciting, emotional, and just plain fun RPGs I’ve played in the last few years,” but details bugs including items not loading, progress stalling, and your character’s hair disappears.

As of Monday afternoon, the game had a rating of 91 out of 100 on review aggregation website Metacritic, with 43 posts counted, although that score is likely to change as more reviews are posted.

The first reviewers only had access to the game on computers rather than the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, where the game is not expected to perform as well. A YouTube personality who goes by the name Skill Up said he conducted his review because CD Projekt made an unusual demand that publishers’ videos only include images distributed by the company.

The launch of Cyberpunk culminates a difficult year for CD Projekt employees, many of whom had been working long hours and mandatory six-day weeks to finish the game and fix bugs. Critics of these excessive overtime, which the video game industry calls “crises,” have suggested that exhausted employees can cause more failures than they actually fix.
