  • The oldest provincial rugby competition in the world has partnered with Carling to officially become the Carling Currie Cup.
  • The new deal will last for the next three seasons.
  • SA Rugby has also announced this month’s Currie Cup matches, in which the Cheetahs defend their title.

SA Rugby and South African Breweries (SAB) on Tuesday announced a new agreement that will see the world’s oldest provincial rugby competition officially named the Carling Currie Cup.

The partnership will last for the next three seasons, marking the Carling Black Label debut in rugby, although the partnership between SA Rugby and SAB dates back almost three decades.

“SAB has been a loyal partner of SA Rugby since the days before rugby turned professional, so it is a great pleasure to build on our partnership with them,” said Jurie Roux, CEO of SA Rugby.

“This is Carling Black Label’s first sponsorship, and we are delighted to have such a well-established and successful brand associated with the Currie Cup, which is a competition that prides itself on its rich heritage.

“This fits perfectly because just as Carling Black Label is the beer of champions, winning the Currie Cup competition remains one of South African rugby’s greatest achievements. This partnership also resonates with the camaraderie in the sport and among the staunch of SA rugby fans.

“What makes this sponsorship even more significant is that Carling Black Label has partnered with us during one of the toughest economic climates in sport and business, and this certainly shows their passion for the Currie Cup and rugby. “.

The Currie Cup will officially kick off on the weekend of November 27/28 and culminate in the final on Saturday, January 23, 2021. All Super Rugby Unlocked registration points will carry over to the Currie Cup.

The Cheetahs will defend the crown with the Lions, Bulls, Griquas, Pumas, Sharks and Western Province vying for the title.

In the first round of games, the Sharks will host the Pumas, the Griquas will face the Lions and the Bulls will travel to Cape Town to face the Western Province. Cheetahs have a goodbye.

The action will build until the semi-finals on Saturday, January 16, 2021, when the top four teams on the record will strive to advance to the final (January 23).
