CAPE TOWN – There has been another attack on ambulance personnel, this time in Mitchells Plain.

On Tuesday morning, two EMS staff members were taking a call in Beacon Valley when they were attacked.

The two paramedics were called in to help a patient in Beacon Valley, which is classified as a red zone area since attacks on emergency personnel have occurred in the area before.

When the couple pulled into the patient’s home, a man ran to the ambulance, pulled out a firearm and fired a shot through the ambulance driver’s window.

The paramedic was shot in the chest, but fortunately he was wearing his own bulletproof vest.

EMS’s Deanna Bessick said this was not the paramedic’s first brush with death.

“He was previously stabbed in the back with a knife in the same area where he and his companions render a fundamental service.”

No arrests have been made.

EMS staff is part of a project created more than a year ago that aims to improve service delivery in Mitchells Plain.

More than a week ago, an ambulance team was also held at gunpoint in Khayelitsha.
