Cricket South Africa (CSA) today I congratulate the trio of Proteas Dale steyn, Villiers ABand Imran Tahir | as much as Dane van Niekerk and Marizanne kapp for being included by the ICC in their Teams of the Decade.
The players were identified and selected by the ICC’s specialized voting academy which comprises leading cricket journalists, broadcasters and former players from around the world.
Former South African first-order hitter De Villiers, widely regarded as one of the best players to ever play limited overs cricket, was named to the ODI and T20I Teams of the Decade.
Leg shooter Imran Tahir, a player who played all 107 of his ODIs in the 2010s and claimed 173 impressive wickets in that span, was chosen alongside De Villiers on the over 50 squad.
Fast pitcher Steyn, who retired from red-ball cricket last season as the nation’s all-time terrain taking leader with 439 strikes, was named to the Test Team of the Decade.
Proteas Women captain Dane van Niekerk and her teammate Marizanne Kapp, meanwhile, were selected to the ODI Women’s Team of the Decade.
“Having our players selected on these teams is an incredible honor,” commented CSA Director of Cricket Graeme Smith. “It is also a huge feather in their caps and speaks to the immense contribution that they have made to cricket not just nationally, but globally.
“Their inclusions also speak to their consistency and their class as individuals. They have performed flawlessly year after year for South Africa and we are very proud of them.
“At CSA, therefore, we would like to congratulate AB, Dale, Immi (Tahir), Dane and Marizanne.”
Smith also had special words of praise for the two Protea Women who made the cut.
“We have seen women’s football evolve at a rapid pace in the last three or four years,” she added. “Players like Dane and Marizanne have been at the forefront of that evolution and their recognition by the ICC is testament to their efforts.”
The ICC Decade Awards is a unique edition of the annual awards program, which aims to celebrate outstanding artists and moments from the last ten years of international cricket.
Individual winners of the prestigious awards, including Rachel Heyhoe Flint for Best Player of the Decade and Sir Garfield Sobers for Best Male Player of the Decade, will be announced simultaneously on all ICC Digital channels, including a live stream on Facebook and YouTube. .
