- The Proteas will host Sri Lanka in two test matches during the traditional holiday season window.
- The Wanderers will host the New Years’ test match as CSA seeks to minimize travel during the tour as a result of coronavirus protocols.
- The Proteas will host Australia and Pakistan in early 2021, with a historic Pakistan tour also at stake.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced on Tuesday its international home game schedule for the 2020/2021 season with the great news that Vagabonds, and not New lands, will host the New Year’s Test against Sri Lanka.
The decision was made to ensure minimal movement during the coronavirus pandemic with Cape Town and Paarl set to host the entire international series of limited overs against England during November and December.
The men’s team has confirmed the upcoming matches against England, Sri Lanka, Australia and Pakistan, all for crucial points in the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League (CWCSL) or the ICC World Test Championship (WTC). .
The international season will begin with a three-game T20 series and a three-game ODI series against England in Cape Town and Paarl.
Sri Lanka will then arrive for the festive period and will play a two-match test series in Centurion and Johannesburg with those matches scheduled to fall into the traditional test-match windows of St. Stephen’s Day and New Years, respectively.
Australia will then arrive in February 2021 for a three-match test series ending in March, and Pakistan will round out the South African summer of cricket with a three-match ODI series and a three-match T20 series in April 2021.
The matches and venues for the Australia and Pakistan tours have yet to be confirmed.
CSA also announced Tuesday that it had appointed a delegation to conduct a security assessment on the feasibility of the Proteas embarking on their first tour to Pakistan since 2007.
Delegates are set to depart for Pakistan this weekend and will report their findings for the tour, which is currently scheduled for early 2021.
“We are delighted to announce the men’s international cricket schedule for the local season,” said Kugandrie Govender, acting chief executive officer of CSA, in a statement.
“It is an absolute pleasure to offer more good news for our cricket loving fans to consume, following last week’s confirmed tour against England and the launch of the national season.
“The Covid-19 pandemic forced many changes to the ICC Future Tours (FTP) Program and the traditional sequence of match scheduling in South Africa this season. That is why I am particularly proud of today’s announcement.
“It is the result of many hours of dedication, negotiation and hard work on the part of the people behind the scenes to ensure our fans have an exciting cricket lineup to look forward to all summer long and even though the matches will be played behind Closed Doors , we will have enough entertainment so that they feel part of the activities on the day of the game.
“It is an important season for all formats of our beautiful game, with players who have a lot to play for regardless of which team they are selected for.”
“Finally, I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation on behalf of CSA, to the boards of directors of England, Sri Lanka, Australia and Pakistan for their agreement with these tours and helping us bring the beautiful game to the South African public under the ‘new normal’ that Covid-19 has presented to us.
“I’m sure we will have a lot of fun with very competitive cricket demonstrations.”
