Crystal Palace’s Wilfried zaha became the first Premier League player not to kneel before kick-off in their 1-0 victory over West brom in Selhurst Park.

Palace moved ahead of Leeds to 11th place, but Zaha’s stance before kick-off made the headlines.

The Ivory Coast international stood his ground as the rest of his Palace teammates and opponents knelt.

The 28-year-old revealed last month while speaking at the Financial Times’ Business of Football summit that he would no longer make the gesture against racial injustice, which has been followed by Premier League players, officials and staff since June.

“As a society, I think we should encourage better education in schools, and social media companies should take stronger action against people who abuse others online, not just footballers,” Zaha said in a statement.

“Now I just want to focus on football and enjoy playing on the field again. I will continue to stand tall.”

Once the action began, Luka Milivojevic scored the only goal from the penalty spot to bring the Baggies closer and closer to the return to the Championship.

Sam Allardyce’s men remain eight points from safety in 19th with just nine games to spare.
