Cape Town – Six people have died after patrons of a tavern in Sweetwater, King William’s Town, allegedly ignored an order to vacate the premises.
According to Eastern Cape Police, two unknown men entered the tavern after 9 p.m. Thursday and ordered everyone to leave, but few obeyed their instructions.
The suspects are alleged to have thrown a gasoline bomb on the premises, locked customers inside and fled the scene.
Firefighters were called in and they managed to get the flames under control, saving some people who were trapped inside in the process. The names and ages of the victims have yet to be confirmed.
Four injured people, three women and one man, were rushed to Gray Hospital for medical treatment.
Six murder and arson charges have been opened and the Hawks are investigating them. The motive for the gasoline bombing is still unknown.
Eastern Cape Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Liziwe Ntshinga expressed her shock at the incident.
“There are not enough or appropriate words to express our shock at the inhuman and brutal way the victims suffered at the mercy of the perpetrators.
” Our detectives must leave no corner untidy in search of the perpetrators behind this cruel act.
“‘We have initiated a 72-hour activation plan and at the same time send our deepest condolences to the victims, their families and close relatives,” he said.
